(5/22 & 23) Flatwater Cycling Weekend

5/22 – Greg Dunbar Memorial Capital City Criterium
5/23 – Pioneers Park Grand Prix

The Capital City Criterium has been a Lincoln racing fixture since 1982. Over the years, it has come and gone, but the name, race venue and excitement around this race make it a “must” for racers across the Midwest. With the addition of a circuit race at Pioneers Park, the Flatwater Cycling Weekend should be circled on your race calendar. Both races are a part of the 2010 Nebraska “Rider of the Year” competition.

Wednesday 4/28 MTB/XC Group Ride

Looking to ride some local trails?    This Wednesday night Joyride is hosting a group ride at Wagon Train Lake at 6:00 pm.  We will plan to ride at 6:15.  All riders and levels welcome.  Directions are as follows:

Take south 68th St past Hickman and take a left (East) on Wagon Trail Road.  Take another left at 110th St. and enter through the Northeast entrance to Wagon Train Rec. Area.  The entrance is the second entrance on the left as you are driving North.  The ride will start from the parking lot next to the beach and boat docking area which is toward the center of Wagon Train.

(4/17 & 18) Le Tour de Husker

Two days of racing. Check it out on NCN. If you’re thinking about trying a race, this weekend is a great opportunity at the UNL Husker Cycling team’s events.  I’m going to get my legs ripped off by the 1/2/3 men and have some fun with friends in the team time trial. Of course, since we’ve not been practicing together, I’ll be sticking to my road bike and insist others do the same.  If you decide to team time trial on TT bikes, make sure you practice A LOT together. Safety first.

4/14/2010 Addendum: Sure, Marc. First and foremost, a team time trial requires perfect drafting coordination. For many people, just doing this on their regular road bikes is plenty challenging enough and will require practice to keep it safe and efficient. Time trial bikes put the rider in an entirely different and less stable position. Riders who have spent little time on their TT bikes, and that includes me so far this year, really shouldn’t be trying to do rotations and all that at speed if their aim is to remain injury free. A wheel overlap, a strong gust, an errant shift of weight altering one’s line — all these things could strew expensive equipment and precious flesh across the pavement.  Thus, I’ll happily ride the team TT on my road bike for fun and fitness and insist my teammates do the same. Our goal will be to practice our form, not lay down the fastest time.
